Pioneering Bio‑Based Packaging with Mixcycling in GREEN‑LOOP Project

 

The GREEN‑LOOP European project continues to make strides in developing sustainable packaging solutions.

In particular, Mixcycling – an Italian spin‑off transforms agricultural by‑products into bio‑based materials, aligning with the EU’s push for greener, more circular value chains, in collaboration with Guala Closures Breganze, has engineered a novel bio-based composite tailored for injection molding, resulting in early prototypes such as screw caps and olive oil dispensers. These prototypes incorporate vegetable fibers and biofillers like rice husk and cork, offering mechanical strength, thermal stability, compostability—and full compliance with EU food contact regulations. 

 

Energy‑Saving Production Techniques

The project’s innovative microwave‑assisted production method significantly reduces energy consumption—by up to 30%—while enhancing material performance during compounding and molding stages. 

 

Regulatory Alignment and Project Impact

Designed to comply with the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), GREEN‑LOOP demonstrates how bio-based materials can deliver performance equivalent to traditional plastics while meeting regulatory standards. These materials showcase strong potential for packaging applications across the food, beverage, and cosmetics sectors.

Bioeconomy and Technology:
how Europe is building new Sustainable Value Chains

Industrial bioeconomy offers companies a unique opportunity to turn sustainability into a competitive advantage by developing sustainable products. Two EU-funded projects—Polymers-5B and GREEN-LOOP—are concrete examples of this approach. They use artificial intelligence and green chemistry to transform agricultural waste into innovative biopolymers. These biodegradable, safe materials are applied in packaging and the textile sector, helping to create circular value chains that strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and industrial autonomy.

In a Europe striving to reduce plastic use and greenhouse gas emissions, industrial bioeconomy emerges as one of the most promising strategic levers for sustainability and competitiveness.

 


From Waste to High-Performance Biopolymers

The two projects, Polymers-5B and GREEN-LOOP, funded by the European Commission, demonstrate how agricultural residues can be transformed into high-performance materials using frontier technologies such as AI, green chemistry, and sustainable design.

Their shared goal is clear: to create new bio-based industrial value chains capable of replacing fossil-based materials, reducing environmental impact, and boosting Europe’s industrial sovereignty.

 


AI Supporting Sustainable Chemistry

A key component of the initiative is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to optimize the synthesis processes of new materials. Predictive simulations help select optimal reaction conditions, reduce experimentation time and costs, and enhance the performance of bioplastics.

Thanks to the GREEN-LOOP platform, these AI models are accessible even to technicians and SMEs, allowing customization of materials and processes without requiring coding skills. This opens up a new frontier for the democratization of sustainable innovation.

 


The Mixcycling Case: Biopolymers for Packaging and Beyond

Within GREEN-LOOP, NSBProject collaborates with Mixcycling, a Veneto-based startup specializing in the upcycling of organic waste—such as rice husks, chamomile, and grape pomace—into compostable biopolymers. These materials can be used in packaging, furniture, cosmetics, and fashion.

Mixcycling’s patented technology enables industrial-scale production, now enhanced by GREEN-LOOP innovations involving plasma, ultrasound, and microwave treatments.

The results are already visible: from scented plant-fiber chairs to compostable beauty product caps, and bioplastic cups and salad bowls for the HoReCa sector.

 


Bioeconomy: A Real Opportunity for Italian Industry

The European bioeconomy is already worth over €2.5 trillion, with an expected annual growth of 6–7% over the next five years.

For Italian companies, the time to invest is now. New EU calls for proposals are open, supporting experimentation with bio-based and circular materials, offering non-repayable funding to boost R&D activities for both SMEs and large enterprises.

This presents a real opportunity to test innovative materials, circularize production chains, and improve environmental impact. It’s a challenge that requires preparation—but one that could lead to a meaningful shift for many businesses.
